Quintana Wins in Playoff, Whaley Three for Three on JGT

Record High Temperature and Field Size Make for a Challenging Competition

SOUTHWICK, Mass. (July 18, 2012) – Over 190 members of the Connecticut Section PGA Junior Golf Association made their way up to Massachusetts today hoping to beat the heat that lingered in the Constitution State. No such relief was found as temperatures skyrocketed nearing 97 degrees for The Ranch Junior Open, the final Junior Golf TOUR (JGT) event hosted in Massachusetts for the 2012 season. In the boys’ competition, however, Brendan Quintana (2012) of West Simsbury, Conn. found a way to stay cool teeing off toward the heat of the day and eventually taking first place honors. Both Quintana and Richard Hanson (2013) of Plainville, Conn. fired one-under-par, 71, forcing a sudden death playoff. The first hole, a short 480-yard par 5, was birdied by both Quintana and Hanson their initial rounds, warranting a birdie in the playoff where Quintana was able to pull out the win with his seventh birdie of the day. David Szewczul (2013) of Farmington, Conn. finished in sole third place, two strokes behind the pair, with a one-over-par, 73 on the day.

After being taken out of position on the hole, Kamireddy finished with a double bogey, 6 thinking he may have just lost the tournament. “I actually played phenomenal in the first round,” says Becker. “To be honest, I just didn’t play as good today. But I hung in there and I kept telling my wife that’s what we had to do. I hit a couple good shots in a row on 12 and 13, and as it turned out, it put me in the lead.  I just played decent from then on in.”
