The Connecticut PGA Championship began in 1929, when the now defunct Hartford Times together with a loosely fit golf professional organization call the Connecticut Professional Organization (CPO) began a championship that would challenge the New England PGA Championship and serve as a qualifier for PGA Members who wished to try to qualify to play in the PGA Championship. Up until 1929, PGA Members from Connecticut and Western Massachusetts would be required to travel to Boston, Massachusetts to compete in the New England championship. The Hartford Times Trophy, a solid silver chalet, was donated by the newspaper.

Dennis Coscina has the most victories in the Connecticut PGA Championship's history with eight. The champion's name is engraved on The Hartford Times Trophy.

In 1933, the Connecticut Section was chartered by The PGA of America and became an official PGA Section. The Connecticut Section took over ownership of the Connecticut PGA Championship. It then became a requirement to have membership in The PGA in order to be eligible to compete.
