DESCRIPTION:Mike Bechard is your man. The 12th-year head golf professional at Ludlow Country Club will be the guest of honor at the 2019 Rollie Jacobs Western Mass. Tee Party. \nBechard will be recognized for his dedication\, commitment and service to golf in Western Massachusetts. “I had thought about it a little over the years\,” the Longmeadow resident said of one of the region’s most prestigious recognitions. “The last few years\, with guys who are friends of mine\, like Kevin Piecuch (CC of Greenfield)\, Rick Fleury (now Ledges GC) and Tim Quirk (formerly Longmeadow CC) getting it … I wondered if it might be maybe this year or next. “It was a pleasant surprise\, it’s something I’m very excited about\,” Bechard said. The popular golf tournament and evening dinner takes place May 9 at Ludlow CC. The Tee Party\, established in 1947\, has long been tabbed the unofficial kickoff to the local golf season. Bechard will begin his 30th year in the PGA program\, a career that started with a single season as an assistant at Crestview CC in Agawam in 1989 and continued with six more under Bob O’Neil at Ludlow CC. From there\, he took his first head professional job at Greenock CC in Lee from 1996 to 2006. He then returned to Ludlow in the same capacity and has been on Tony Lema Drive ever since. SUMMARY:Julius Boros Challenge Cup Matches
DESCRIPTION:The 48th Julius Boros Challenge Cup Matches will be held at New Haven Country Club\, in New Haven\, Conn. Thursday\, May 16\, 2019. This is a co-sponsored event that pits PGA Professionals versus amateurs from the Connecticut State Golf Association. All players participate in both individual and team matches. In 2018\, the Connecticut State Golf Association team had some solid play from all of their participants and were able to end the Connecticut PGA’s 6-year winning streak with a 36 1/2 to 26 1/2 victory. Each team fields 14 players. \nThe team format is match play four-ball with the front nine worth one point; back nine worth one point; and the overall result worth one point. The individual matches follow the same format. The teams compete for the Julius Boros Trophy\, donated by Boros\, the former PGA and U.S. Open champion who hailed from Connecticut. The PGA holds a 34-13 match record over the CSGA. The members of the professional team qualify to play by finishing among the top eight (8) in section PGA Player of the Year point standings and the top two (2) seniors in the section Senior PGA Player of the Year point standings. Also joining the team are the reigning Connecticut PGA Champion\, the PGA Professional from the host club\, and two (2) captain’s selections. \nRalph Salito is the PGA Team captain.
