2015 Connecticut Section PGA Fall Meeting

NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. (December 1, 2015) – Russ Held, Connecticut Section PGA Publicist.

And that’s a wrap. The Connecticut Section PGA put an official close to its 2015 season Tuesday after holding its annual Fall Meeting at Lake of Isles.

An agenda of year-end reports, new business, elections and encouragement for more membership involvement ran smoothly for the nearly 100 Section members in attendance. The 82nd Fall Meeting took place a day after the Section held its 2015 Hall of Fame Induction and Champions Tribute there.

The day was capped by the election of Ron Dellostritto of Wethersfield Country Club’s and Bob Sparks of Fairview Farm Golf Club to three-year terms on the Board of Directors. The duo was chosen from a list of candidates that included Tom Miller of CC of Woodbridge, Clubs to Go/Tashua Knolls GC’s Mike Martin and PGA Life Member Art Decko.

Connecticut Section PGA rolls out Hall of Fame Induction and Champions Tribute

NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. (November 30, 2015) – Russ Held, Connecticut Section PGA Publicist.

One look back . . . and two steps forward. The Connecticut Section PGA took time to honor past accomplishments of its members and highlight its future, during its 2015 Hall of Fame Induction and Champions Tribute at Lake of Isles Monday night.

"We're very proud of our champions, our players of the year and our junior golfers,'' Connecticut Section PGA executive director Tom Hantke said. "And it's a great (setting) to blend the generations of golf.''

A full house of 200 people helped celebrate the main event – the induction of Tony Kelley, Tim Gavronski and Jim Orsi as its eighth class in its Hall of Fame. "I think this is one of our most special nights,'' Section president Bill Flood said. "We have three of our best professionals going into our Hall of Fame . . . and the best of our young juniors are here to see it all, to see where golf and their accomplishments have taken them.''

The headliners were joined by Frank Selva Presidents' Award honoree Andrew Campbell and four winners of the Section's top junior awards. Junior Golf Association Players of the Year Angela Garvin and Noah Peterson were recognized along with Jack Kelly Sportsmanship Award winners Sophia Qui and Matthew Stafford.

"We had 200 people here and probably 25 to 40 professionals,'' Flood said. "It's nice to see the support for those who have accomplished so much in our Section.''

2015 Hall of Fame Inductee Profile - Jim Orsi

SOUTH GLASTONBURY, Conn. (November 25, 2015) - Russ Held, Connecticut Section PGA Publicist

Jim Orsi never dreamed of the Hall of Fame. And for good reason. When the longtime golf professional at New London Country Club retired in 1988, the Connecticut Section PGA had not yet established a shrine to recognize its best.

“It wasn’t something I could look forward to . . . they didn’t have one,’’ Orsi said. “Since they told me, I’ve been able to think about it a little at a time. I get very emotional about it, in a good way. I had no idea I’d ever be elected. When I retired, they didn’t have it.

“You can’t go any higher than this.’’

Orsi is part of a Hall of Fame class that includes fellow pros Tim Gavronski of Shuttle Meadow CC and Tony Kelley of Wyckoff CC. The Section will induct its eighth class at its Hall of Fame Induction and Champions Tribute on Nov. 30 at Lake of Isles in North Stonington, Conn. The program also includes recognition of the 2015 PGA Member Championship winners, Player of the Year awards and the winner of the President’s Award.

Connecticut Section PGA Hall of Fame committee member Gary Reynolds said Orsi’s willingness to volunteer his services, knowledge and experience helped build a stronger association. “He stepped up and continued to step up at times when others did not want to,’’ Reynolds said. “That really helped build a bridge for the future, with his sacrifices. He has been a steadfast supporter of the Section and of the business of the Section.’’

2015 Hall of Fame Inductee Profile - Tony Kelley

SOUTH GLASTONBURY, Conn. (November 24, 2015) - Russ Held, Connecticut Section PGA Publicist

Soft-spoken and humble, Tony Kelley has let his resume do the talking. And it just screams of the Hall of Fame.

The head golf professional at Wyckoff Country Club in Holyoke, Mass., has etched his place as one of the best golfers in the Connecticut Section PGA since its establishment in 1933. So it’s no surprise that Kelley has found his way to the Section’s Hall of Fame, joining two fellow club professionals as members of its Hall of Fame Class of 2015.

“It was a shock to me,” Kelley said of the news. “I’m very humbled, it’s quite an honor. I knew guys like Franny (Marrello) and others my age were in it. So maybe I thought I was somewhere (in consideration).’’

The Section will induct its eighth class at its Hall of Fame Induction and Champions Tribute on Nov. 30 at Lake of Isles in North Stonington, Conn.  “You look at the other Hall of Famers and they are the cream of crop,’’ Kelley said. “Somebody must have thought I’ve done OK over the years.’’

Connecticut Section PGA Hall of Fame committee member Gary Reynolds said Kelley is a multi-dimensional golf professional. “Tony is such a dedicated and competitive golfer,’’ Reynolds said. “He has an outstanding, consistent record over the decades. And at the same time, he has been a rock solid pro at his club. His service to the association and the way he plays the game . . . he’s been outstanding.’’
