Hop Meadow Country Club set to host Connecticut Section PGA Senior and Assistant Championships on Monday
SIMSBURY, Conn. (August 26, 2022) – Hop Meadow Country Club will simultaneously host two of the Connecticut Section PGA Member championships beginning Monday.
The 36-hole 71st Senior Connecticut PGA Championship will be conducted over two days; the 36-hole 60th Assistant Connecticut PGA Championship over one.
Established in 1961 and located in the heart of the Farmington Valley, Hop Meadow is one of central Connecticut’s finest full-service private clubs. The par 72, Geoffrey Cornish designed championship golf course will be hosting the Senior Championship for the first time. The club previously hosted the Assistant Championship in 1992.
This will be the third consecutive year that the Connecticut Section is conducting both championships on the same course at the same time.
There are 32 professionals entered in the Senior Championship which is presented by Cadillac and supported by the Golf Channel.
There are 27 professionals entered in the National Car Rental Assistant Championship. Supporting sponsors are Srixon, Cleveland Golf, XXIO, and Asics.
Both championships are supported by the PGA TOUR, and both include opportunities for top finishers to advance to their respective national championships later this year.
Jason Gobleck of the Golf Center at Lyman Orchards is the defending senior champion and one of six former champions that are entered. The others are Mike Gramelis-2008, Mike Martin-2018, Billy Downes-2020, 4-time winner Jack McConachie (2001, 2002, 2009, 2013), and 7-time winner Fran Marrello (2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019).
Marrello won the Assistant Championship in 1992 that was conducted at Hop Meadow.
Brian Quilter (2017, 2020) of Black Hall Club is the only former champion entered in the Assistant Championship.
The first 18-hole round of the Assistant Championship gets underway with a modified shotgun start at 8:30 AM on Monday. Players will be repaired for their second round which will be played on Monday afternoon.
Starting times for round one of the Senior Championship begins at 9:15 AM on Monday. The final round will be played on Tuesday.
