If you were looking for a challenge, East Mountain delivered…and then some.
Mother Nature decided to turn the thermostat all the way up, with temperatures pushing toward record highs and a heat index well over 100Β°. Heat warnings were everywhere, and while we all love golf, no round is worth risking a Veteran’s health.
So, we made the call.
Instead of our scheduled 18-hole event, Play Day #5 became a 9-hole scramble. Half the field headed to the front nine, while the other half teed off on the back. It wasn’t Plan A, but thanks to everyone’s flexibility, positive attitude, and plenty of water, we still had another outstanding Connecticut PGA HOPE Play Day.
Since not everyone played the same nine holes, we decided it wouldn’t be fair to compare scores. Instead, every Veteran who showed up earned one participation point for their Land, Sea, or Air division.
With Sea having fewer than 10 participants, we also introduced a new minimum participation rule to help keep the championship balanced throughout the season.
Land β 16
Sea β 15
Air β 13
Air β 175
Sea β 173
Land β 172
Take a look at that leaderboard.
Three Play Days ago, Air looked like they were pulling away. Now? Just three points separate all three branches. That’s about as close as it gets.
Every birdie…
Every par…
Every Veteran who shows up…
It all matters.
Next up, we head to Tumble Brook Country Club, where we’ll be back to 18 holes and our normal scoring format. With the championship this tight, nobody can afford to take a week off.
Thanks again to everyone who came out, battled the heat, looked out for one another, and proved once again that PGA HOPE is about far more than golf.
We’ll see you at Tumble Brook.
And remember… swing hard. If you happen to hit it, the ball might go far. Β
