Brent Ito Lights up the Jones Course at Lyman Orchards and Leads by Four in the Connecticut PGA Open
Course Record Tying 64 Accomplished Without Hitting Driver
MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. (August 15, 2022) – Brent Ito played nearly flawless golf today on the Jones Course at the Lyman Orchards Golf Club, tying the competitive course record of 8-under par 64, and opened up a four-stroke lead in the Connecticut PGA Open.
Ito, a 2021 graduate from the University of Michigan who has Canadian Tour status with the PGA TOUR, said it was his best competitive round of golf.
How ironic that was considering he did not hit a single driver on the 6,967-yard course that he was playing for the first time.
“I noticed I cracked in my driver yesterday,” Ito said. “So, I put a substitute in the bag today but never pulled it out.”
The 23-year old relied on his 3-wood and missed only two fairways. He said that he also hit 17 greens in regulation and recorded 9 birdies, which were mostly from close range.
“It might have been 60 or 70 total feet of putts for the round.”
Ito’s lone bogey was on hole number 10, the only green his missed in regulation.
Charlie Blanchard, the men’s golf coach at Bryant University and the 2021 Connecticut Senior Open champion, shot 4-under par 68 and is alone in second place. Blanchard recorded 8 birdies on his round which were offset by one double and two bogies.
Andrew DeForest of Cottekill, N.Y., stands in third place after posting 69 which featured 5 birdies and two bogies.
There are six players tied for fourth at 2-under par 70 – Kyle Gallo, Timothy Hegarty, Taylor Kay-Green, Jason Thresher, Timothy Umphrey, and Jason Zaniewski.
Defending champion Fletcher Babcock shot 1-under 71 and is tied in 10th place heading into tomorrow’s final 18-hole round.
Ito, Blanchard, and DeForest are paired together tomorrow, starting at 1:20 PM in the final group.
