Large Crowds Flock to Special Olympics of Connecticut Fall Sports Festival

Supported by the Connecticut Section PGA Golf Foundation

HAMDEN, Conn. (September 10, 2012) - Yesterday, Sleeping Giant Golf Course played host to the golf portion of 2012 Fall Sports Festival administered by the Special Olympics of Connecticut and supported by the Connecticut Section PGA Golf Foundation. Many sports and activities where conducted on both Saturday, September 8, and Sunday, September 9, including softball, sailing, bocce, and croquet.
Three separate golf competitions were held for athletes of all abilities. A total of 109 Special Olympians began by participating in the Skill Competition which included putting, chipping, and full swing. The 9-hole alternate shot competition was the biggest of the three with 65 athletes and 65 partners participating. Also, eight athletes competed individually in the 9-hole event. Nearly 400 athletes, family members, coaches, volunteers, and staff were in attendance for the Golf Fall Sports Festival.
The Connecticut Section PGA Golf Foundation is proud to have awarded financial grants to the Special Olympics of Connecticut since 2001 totaling nearly $23,000.

SHERMAN, Conn. – Fran Marrello, PGA Life Member, of Plymouth, Conn. put on quite the show today at The Club at River Oaks in Sherman, Conn. following heavy morning rain, delaying the start of the 61st Senior Connecticut PGA Championship & Qualifier. GLASTONBURY, Conn. (August 21, 2012) – Patrick Albanesi (2014) of Avon, Conn. fires a two-under-par, 70 in the Glastonbury Hills Junior Open today for his first win on the Junior Golf TOUR this season. Albanesi, the 2011 Junior Boys’ Player of the Year, played in the Junior Connecticut PGA Championship in July and finished tied for second with 72-73 for a total of 145. Five players tied for second today after a three-over-par, 75: Robert Libiszewski (2015) of Ludlow, Mass., Jacob Ecke (2014) of Cheshire, Conn., Jack Murphy (2014) of Wethersfield, Conn., Aaron Donnelli (2013) of Newington, Conn., and Eric Austin (2014) of Northford, Conn.

Team DiRico Sweeps Team Competition in Antigua Pro-Am

Springfield C.C. Second in Both Gross & Net Events

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. (August 20, 2012) – PGA Professional, Dan DiRico of East Longmeadow, Mass., leads his team of Chris Demers, Scott Murdock, and Bruce Morgan, to victory in both the gross and net divisions today at the Antigua Pro—Am Series #5 held at Wethersfield Country Club. Team DiRico fired a nine-under-par, 62 in the gross division and a fourteen-under-par, 57 in the net division for victory by one stroke in both.
Three teams tied for second in the gross competition at eight-under-par, 63; Springfield Country Club led by Michael Nordstrom, Wethersfield Country Club led by Josh Kozyra, and Team Marrello led by PGA Life Member, Fran Marrello.

HEBRON, Conn. (August 20, 2012) – First-year Junior Golf Association Member, Jake Hedberg (2015) of Newington, Conn. takes home the boys’ overall victory today in the McDermott Junior Invitational at Tallwood Country Club. Hedberg got off to a quick start today at four-under-par through just four holes. Shaky 11th and 12th holes were followed up by a consistent finish to fire a one-under-par, 71, winning by one stroke. Close behind, and tied for second, was current Boys’ Player of the Year points leader, Michael Thibodeau (2012) of Ellington, Conn. and Nicklaus Harrington (2015) of Chapin, Conn. at even par, 72.

Suffield Country Club’s Stan McLennan Named Connecticut PGA Golf Professional of the Year

Eight Other Special Award Winners Announced

ROCKY HILL, Conn. (August 17, 2012) – The Board of Directors of the Connecticut Section PGA, in conjunction with the Special Awards committee, announces this years’ Golf Professional of the Year, the highest honor bestowed upon a PGA of America member, as Stanley G. McLennan of Suffield Country Club in Suffield, Conn. Golf Professional of the Year is awarded for overall performance as a golf professional, leadership, service to his/her Section, the ability to inspire fellow professionals, and the promotion of the game of golf. McLennan will lead the 2012 Special Awards Winners being honored Sunday, November 18, at the Special Awards Banquet at Lake of Isles, a Troon Golf Destination, presented by Club Car and supported by Kirk & Matz and Lake of Isles.


McLennan is the 55th recipient of the Golf Professional of the Year award since 1952 when the Section Special Awards Program began. He was previously honored in 2005 as the Private Merchandiser of the Year and has also served on Tournament Committee and the Connecticut PGA Board of Directors. He heads a list of eight other special award winners including, Jack McConachie, Pine Valley Golf Course, as Teacher of the Year; Jeff Beyer, Willow Brook Golf Course, as Junior Golf Leader; Bobby Brown, Tashua Knolls Golf Course, as Horton Smith Award recipient; Andrew Campbell, Black Hall Club, as Bill Strausbaugh Award recipient; Jodi Lauzier, Orchards Golf Club, as Assistant Professional of the Year; Marc Bayram, Timberlin Golf Club, as the Merchandiser of the Year - Public; Jason Waters, Hop Meadow Country Club, as the Merchandiser of the Year - Private; and Gary Rencurrell, Bristol, Conn., as the Golf Sales Representative of the Year.

Barnsley Takes 16th Connecticut PGA Professional Championship

Barnsley. Marrello Qualify for 2013 PGA Professional National Championship

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (August 14, 2012) – Paul Barnsley of Racebrook Country Club, winner of the 16th Connecticut PGA Professional Championship will lead runner-up, Fran Marrello, PGA Life Member and the Connecticut PGA Player of the Year to compete in the 46th PGA Professional National Championship (PGA PNC) presented by Club Car, Merecedes-Benz USA, and OMEGA, June 23-26, 2013, at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. The top 20 finishers in the PGA PNC will then travel to Oak Hill Country Club for the 95th PGA Championship to play in the strongest, all professional tournament field in golf. Today, Barnsley turned in a winning total of three-under-par 141 to capture the Championship title by just one stroke. Gramelis, Mongillo Lead 16th Connecticut PGA Professional Championship

One Round Stands Between Them & 2012 PGA PNC

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (August 13, 2012) – Both Mike Gramelis of Golf Galaxy and Joe Mongillo of Dick’s Sporting Goods fired a beautiful three-under-par 69 today at Wampanoag Country Club to make their way to the top of the 16th Connecticut PGA Professional Championship leaderboard. Gramelis played a more consistent game with just one bogey and four birdies on the day. Mongillo, however, lit up the middle 7 holes with an astounding five birdies on his way to three under.
“I hit it well today,” says Mongillo. “I don’t think I missed a fairway which was nice. I’ve had more time to practice and play so it’s really started to pay off in my rounds.” Not to sell himself short, Mongillo has already won three Connecticut PGA events this year, looking to make this his fourth, and second Championship win having won the 46th Assistant Championship in 2008.
